25 Canada Square, also known as Citi Tower, is a 42-storey office building overlooking Canada Square and is among the largest workplace refurbishment projects in Europe. The £1.1 billion refurbishment is a major milestone in the redevelopment of Canary Wharf. By choosing to refurbish rather than demolish the existing structure, Citi is expected to save an estimated 100,000 tonnes of embodied carbon, supporting its commitment to sustainability. The tower has been comprehensively refurbished to create flexible work and collaboration spaces, alongside wellbeing zones for employees, reflecting the changing nature of modern workplaces. As part of the wider redevelopment, a striking three-storey winter garden was created within the tower.
Equipment supplied:
Working on behalf of main contractor Overbury, Integral Cradles delivered project-specific access solutions for the tower. The scope of works comprised:
- 1No. long-reach single jib lifting crane, installed on the existing BMU track system at level 44
- 1No. bespoke cantilevered mobile scaffold tower reaching the full three storeys of the winter garden, incorporating two cantilevered platforms, project-specific anchor points and a purpose-built scaffold base
Integral Cradles also provided full training to Citi’s staff on the safe use of the bespoke winter garden system, ensuring the space can be maintained safely and efficiently for years to come.
Challenges Overcome:
The winter garden presented a unique access challenge, requiring a system that could provide full three-storey reach for maintenance teams without compromising the planting below. Working closely with Overbury, the Integral Cradles design team developed a cantilevered mobile scaffold tower with a purpose-built base designed to overarch the planting areas, meeting the project’s structural and access requirements without impacting the landscaping beneath.
